At KOST USA, a Cincinnati-based manufacturer of specialty chemicals, increased customer demand created a need for the company to build a new glycol processing plant as well as upgrade existing parts of the current facility.

However poor soil stability made foundation design for the new plant difficult and expensive, threatening the feasibility of the project. Using the (GPS) system, a mat foundation solution was developed for substantially less money. This ‘floating’ foundation provided the support needed for 30 holding tanks. Total savings derived from using a mat foundation was $750,000 which meant KOST could go forward with its plans.

Beyond the mat foundations for storage tanks, the ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ (RLG) upgraded the existing building’s packaging area roof, a warehouse deck replacement, all piping fabrication, installation, rigging and setting as well as electrical and communication renovations.

Additions included a new 5,000 square-foot office and a 2,800 square-foot lab. RLG fabricated and erected a new six-bay, truck load-out station.

WHY GPS WAS THE RIGHT SOLUTION

While this unique plan was not considered by other firms, RLG accomplished it successfully and affordably. The foundations at KOST have since held more than 400 million pounds of material without moving a fraction of an inch over a three-year period.
